Savar Govt. College is a leading public institution of higher education located in Savar Municipality on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Founded to meet the educational needs of the local rural and suburban community, it has grown into a respected multidisciplinary college offering programs in Science, Arts, Humanities, and Commerce at HSC, Honours, and Master’s levels under the National University. The college emphasizes quality education, character building, and social responsibility, aiming to produce highly skilled manpower, visionary professional leaders, and responsible citizens. Its scenic campus at Thana Road features modern classrooms, advanced laboratories, an extensive library, and dedicated facilities for sports, cultural programs, and student organizations, creating a vibrant environment for holistic learning and personal development.
The origins of Savar Govt. College date back to 1967, when it was established as Savar University College to provide accessible higher education for students in the then predominantly rural Savar region. Land for the campus was donated by Priyabala Saha, wife of noted philanthropist Rakhal Chandra Saha, reflecting strong community commitment to education. In its early years, the college started with limited programs and facilities, gradually expanding departments in Science, Arts, Humanities, and Commerce as demand for higher education increased. Affiliation with the National University of Bangladesh ensured standardized curricula and nationally recognized degrees. Over time, steady administrative leadership, dedicated teachers, and support from local stakeholders helped transform the institution from a small university college into a prominent regional center of learning.
A defining milestone in the history of Savar Govt. College came in 2017, when it received full government recognition and was nationalized, strengthening its infrastructure, staffing, and academic resources under the public education system. Today, the college offers structured HSC, Honours, and Master’s programs, supported by modern laboratories, ICT-enabled classrooms, and a rich library, alongside active co-curricular platforms for debate, culture, sports, and social service. Its mission is pursued through quality teaching, relevant training, and useful research that help students realize their intellectual, social, and personal potential. Looking ahead, Savar Govt. College is committed to deepening digital integration, enhancing research and skill-based education, and building stronger linkages with community and industry so that graduates can better contribute to national development in an increasingly competitive world.
